SOM says of itself:

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) is one of the largest and most influential architecture, interior design, engineering, and urban planning firms in the world…

…Collaboration is a guiding force at SOM, as we believe that the best results stem from an ongoing dialogue with all stakeholders. With our clients as our partners, we approach each project as a unique challenge. Our integrated practice brings together experts in architecture, interiors, engineering, and urban planning to create innovative solutions…

As a young engineer, Mr. DiCarlo participated in these large and complex projects. Design teams counted 10’s of employees, including 4-5 structural engineers. Tasks were parsed-out but constantly overlapping.

Mr. DiCarlo’s engineering contributions included:

  • horizontal and lateral framing systems in reinforced concrete;
  • vaults, domes, and set-back structures designed in structural steel;
  • structural framing for below-ground parking (cars) and delivery (trucks);
  • wharf pile and platform structures.
